ALLIANCE-UNION CHRONOLOGY: Webfriend Tom Dell'Aringa reworked these files into far more elegant form.  These won't give away any books: they're my initial vision of the bridge between space travel as we know it and the foundation of the star-faring civilization, year by year and ship-call by ship-call. I worked this whole thing out on my faithful 48-k Atari, back in those days, using real stars, and real distances, and amazingly, it still works pretty well.

	Note: two fast-moving reviewers have concluded this is a y/a novel, perhaps because the protagonists are young. The writer doesn't think so. It's a piece of the Alliance-Union universe, and teens, in the case of teens who've lived  40 time-dilated years, are a fairly different piece of work, psychologically speaking. I definitely call that science fiction---not y/a.

    ISBN Numbers

If you're trying to find a book....and the store wants that pesky ISBN number....

No common denominator except that these answers I gave one person or notes I took for myself might be of general interest. This is my advice for people starting out writing.

• Pre- and Post-1900's Language  Are you suspicious that the Romans didn't have telescopes? That the term "Smokin'" isn't appropriate in the mouth of an 18th century lady?

• That the novel you're reading is attributing something to 16th century science that just seems a bit...out of time?

• This is a dictionary for both readers and writers: of fantasy and historical fiction.  It's one of those small pieces of information that took me a long time to gather and that I'm glad to make available. One of the delights of the 'Net is that such little lists once done can now reach others of like interests.

• Writerisms and Other Sins The Really Wretched Expressions I wish would drop out of writing....also, How to strengthen your own writing and how to use those pesky 'who' and 'whom' words.

• Strong vs. Weak Characters This started as an online discussion about "who writes strong female characters" from a reader's point of view, and set me to thinking. What you see isn't always how a character functions in a plot. This observation is for those looking through the writer's end of the telescope....but it may satisfy people who've been truly bothered by a character. What makes a strong character weak? And how can you tell?
